Panthers finish second in AUS women's hoops standing

SYDNEY, N.S. — Hannah Brown had 28 points and 12 rebounds as the Cape Breton Capers defeated the UPEI Panthers 80-70 Friday to clinch top spot in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s basketball conference.

The Panthers will be seeded second at next weekend’s AUS championship in Halifax.

Monique Calliste and Madison Munro scored 18 and 14 points, respectively, while Munro hauled in eight rebounds. Brown also had three assists, three blocks and a steal.

Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 26 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists to lead the Panthers. Reese Baxendale, Karla Yepez and Jane McLaughlin scored 13, 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Carolina Del Santo had 13 rebounds and five assists.

The Panthers had fewer turnovers (12-22) but only hit 32 per cent of their 75 shots while the Capers nailed half of their 55 attempts.

Cape Breton finished the season 18-2 and is four points up on UPEI (16-3), which plays its final game of the regular season tonight at 6 p.m. at St. FX (0-19).

The AUS championships are set for the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax next week. Here is the schedule:

Friday’s quarter-finals

1 p.m. – Memorial (5) vs. UNB (4).

3 p.m. – Dalhousie (6) vs. Acadia (3)

Saturday, March 2 semifinals

1 p.m. – Memorial-UNB winner vs. Cape Breton (1).

3 p.m. – Dalhousie-Acadia winner vs. UPEI (2).

Sunday, March 3 final

1 p.m. – Semifinal winners.
