Women's Reds defeat UPEI in Panthers home opener

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Laura Kaye had a game-high 24 points to pace the UNB Varsity Reds past the host UPEI Panthers Friday in Atlantic University Sport womens basketball action.

Grace Wade added 15 points while Eva Tumwine chipped in 12 and Emily MacLeod had 10 and 11 rebounds off the bench as the Reds erased an early deficit.

UPEI led 14-12 after the first quarter but trailed 35-33 at the half and 57-48 heading to the fourth.

Rookie Reese Baxendale had a team-high 16 points for the Panthers while Kiera Rigby had 14 and Jane McLaughlin 10 as the Panthers only shot 34.5 per cent from the field and 57 per cent from the free-throw line. UPEI was outrebounded 39-25.

The Reds improved to 3-0 while the Panthers are 1-2. The teams play Saturday at 6 p.m.
