University/College roundup: Lancers unable to keep lead against No. 1-ranked Western

A second-half surge carried the No. 1-ranked Western University Mustangs to a 58-25 win over the University of Windsor Lancers in OUA football action on Saturday before a crowd of 1,465 at Alumni Field.

The game marked the first time Windsor first-year head coach Jean-Paul Circelli had faced his former team. The Lancers built a four-point lead in second quarter, but Western closed with the quarter’s final 10 points to take a six-point lead and then dominated the second half.

Windsor quarterback Sam Girard had a strong game. He completed 25-of-35 passes for 396 yards and two touchdowns while running in another score.

Girard hit Matthew James, who had seven catches for 180 yards, with an 82-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and found Callin Bethune with an 18-yard scoring strike. Girard also had a one-yard touchdown run while Clayton Shreve ran in a two-point convert. Kicker Griffin Fenton hit a 15-yard field goal and two converts.

Defensively, linebacker Daniel Metcalfe had eight tackles and an interception for the Lancers (1-5) against the Mustangs (6-0).

Cup title

For the third-straight year, the University of Windsor Lancers men’s volleyball team captured the Humber Cup tournament in Hamilton.

The Lancers went 4-0 in pool play before sweeping Limoilou College in the semis and then beating Western in four games in the final.

Fourth-year setter Nolan Langley was named tournament MVP while outside hitter Roland Bouchard was named to the tournament all-star team.

Lancers soccer

The University of Windsor Lancers men’s team played to a 0-0 draw with the Western Mustangs on Sunday at Alumni Field while the women’s team fell 3-0 to Western in OUA soccer action.

Sebastien Lee-Daigle got credit for the shutout for the Lancers (4-2-4) against the Mustangs (4-4-2).

Saints sweep

The St. Clair Saints now boast a nine-game winning streak after sweeping a pair of doubleheaders at Mic Mac Park on the weekend in OCAA softball action.

The Saints scored a pair of mercy wins over Mohawk on Sunday by scores of 13-2 and 10-0.

In the opener, Rya Cowan got the win and had three hits, including a three-run homer. Jenna Hillman and Jordan Taylor also had three hits each.

Pitcher Olivia Elliott got credit for her seventh win of the season in the second game. Cowan homered again and drove in four runs while Mary O’Neil added three hits.

On Saturday, the Saints beat Seneca 2-1 and then posted an 11-0 mercy win in the second game.

Elliott got the win in the opener and Taylor had three hits. In the second game, Hannah Desrosiers got the win while Cowan homered and drove in five runs.

Saints baseball

The St. Clair Saints fell 5-0 to Durham on Sunday in OCAA baseball play on Sunday at Lacasse Park.

Aiden Pitre had a pair of hits for the Saints, who fell to 7-4 on the season and sit tied for second place.
