CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – High-speed talent is expected to be on display today during P.E.I. Colt Stakes as a doubleheader takes place at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The 12-dash afternoon card begins at 1 p.m. with the two-year-old pacers featured on the program in divisions of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes, including a quartet of undefeated pacers in three straight races.
Magical Mistress will be the first one to put her undefeated streak to the test in Race 8 for a $6,900 purse. Adam Merner handles the daughter of Camystic for owner Barry Martin of Sydney, N.S., and trainer Stephen Gass. The daughter of Maritime champion Meridan Magic has been superb all season with six wins in her career. Magical Mistress draws Post 2 but will contend with another undefeated filly in Post 7 entry After The Lovin, who has won all three of her starts this year.
Race analyst Les MacIsaac sides with Magical Mistress to continue her winning ways.
“If you want to see a two-year-old filly with some gate speed take a look at the replay of her last one,” MacIsaac said of her 1:56.1 lifetime-best trip. “She's six-for-six and yet to be seriously challenged. Enough said.”
Race 9 has another undefeated pacer as the two-year-old pacing colts take the track for a $6,700 pot. Woodmere Bolt is unbeaten in seven starts in his career and retains the services of veteran reinsman Earl Smith from Post 3 for Island owners Peter Smith and Gerald Morrisey, along with Arnold Hagen of Nova Scotia. The son of Malicious has been on front at the quarter in every one of his races to date and has won by open space in all but one race.
Therealdeal puts it all on the line from Post 3 in Race 10 for a $6,900 purse in P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old filly action. Walter Cheverie drives the filly for trainer Joe Baxter and owners Jennifer Baxter and Gregory Francis of Windsor, N.S. With five wins from five starts, it has been a month since Therealdeal last raced during Old Home Week in Charlottetown.
The night card starts at 7 p.m.
The 12-dash program features the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for three-year-old pacers along with the Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series.
The three-year-old pacing fillies compete in four divisions of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for $5,800 purses. Tobins Terror is favoured in the first division in Race 1 drawing Post 4 for driver Marc Campbell and trainer Gary Chappell.
R Es Shabla leads the way as the morning-line choice in Race 3 for driver Mike McGuigan and trainer Len McGuigan, while Bettim Jackie has rail control in another split in Race 6 with Gilles Barrieau at the lines for trainer Jeff Lilley. The final three-year-old filly division is in Race 9 as Royaltywestho looks to re-establish dominance from Post 3 for Cheverie and trainer Joe Baxter.
In pacing colt action, Sock It Away will put his perfect season to the test in Race 7 for a $7,200 pot. Campbell drives the Post 7 starter for trainer Kevin MacLean after the son of Pang Shui has won all 11 of his sophomore starts in 2018.
The other three-year-old pacing colt divisions are in Races 5 and 11.
