CAVENDISH, P.E.I. — The third time was a charm for Fiona Thompson.

After finishing second the last two years at the Cooke Insurance P.E.I. Amateur Golf Championship, the Cornwall resident claimed victory Sunday at Eagles Glenn of Cavendish.

“It’s nice to be back in the winner’s circle,” she said. “Playing golf for over 20 years, I still get a buzz, a thrill, about playing golf.”

She said the victory meant a little more after receiving her Canadian citizenship in October.

“I am thrilled. It’s a real honour for me to win it,” she said. “I am citizen of Canada now so it’s even more of a thrill for me to sort of represent P.E.I. and win the provincial championship.”

She moved to the Island in 2010 from a community just outside London, England. She didn’t know anybody at the time, but said she has made a lot of friends and golf has helped.

“Golf has always been my life,” she said. “I was lucky enough to play some of the best courses and play with some of the best people in the U.K.”
She said they would spend six months travelling Europe playing tournament golf.

Thompson shot a three-round total of 18-over 234 to win the amateur by six strokes over Stratford’s Sherry White (240) and Stanhope’s Chrissie MacLauchlan (241), who combined to win the past three amateurs.

Thompson opened this year’s tournament with a 4-over 76 on Friday and completed the championship with rounds of 77 and 81. She entered the final round with a four-shot lead.

“After Round 2, I knew I was in a good position. If I could keep it going I could pretty much seal the deal.”

Thompson, who has previously won the Avondale Open and the Harvest Moon, will set her sights on the Stanhope Open, Aug. 3 and 4.

Seniors

White captured the senior women’s championship over MacLauchlan. White shot a 7-over 79 on Sunday to go with an opening round 81 and Saturday’s 80.

Juniors

New Glasgow’s Jacquelyn Taylor won the two-round junior girls’ title.

Taylor had rounds of 95 and 90 to win the title. Stratford’s Grace Yeo (203) and Charlottetown’s Charlotte Cluney (208) completed the field.
