CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Stratford soccer player Kathrine McEwen will be carrying on the family tradition when she pulls on the Holland College Hurricanes jersey and takes to the pitch this fall.

Her older sister Karleigh was on the Hurricanes golf team in 2015-16 and 2016-17 while their father Derek has been an assistant coach with the college’s women’s soccer team the past four seasons.

“I have been following the Hurricanes and they have proven to be a competitive program year after year,” Kathrine said. “I look forward to becoming part of a top-level team and growing as a player throughout the upcoming seasons.”

The speedy centre-midfielder, who brings premier, provincial and Canada Games experience with her to the ‘Canes, said she sees the field well, plays with a competitive edge and knows the importance of fitness to play at the next level.

Head coach Kris McKinnon is pleased with the new addition to his roster.

“Kathrine will have a positive impact on our team from Day 1,” he said. “Her soccer IQ and experience in playing at the highest level will serve her and the team well. Kathrine’s vision and composure with the ball will help her teammates around her. We, as a program, are very excited to add Kathrine to the ‘Canes family both as a person and athlete.”

The Hurricanes are looking to rebound after a disappointing season in 2017 where they struggled in the second half, narrowly missing the playoffs with a 4-5-3 record through a tiebreaker for fourth position.

“I believe I can bring positive leadership qualities to the team,” Kathrine shared. “I am a very vocal player who is always trying to encourage my teammates and ask for their best effort both on and off the field. Expect a very offensive team in 2018 as we look to compete with the best in the conference this season.”

Kathrine will be studying business administration.

“I decided to enroll at Holland College as their two-plus-two business degree offers an opportunity to learn both the practical and theoretical side of business,” she expressed. “Taking the two-plus-two also provides numerous different co-op and (on-the-job) opportunities.”

The two-plus-two degree gives students an opportunity to earn their diploma at Holland College and then a university degree in as little as two additional years.
