CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The P.E.I. Abbies will play the Ontario Blues Friday in quarter-final play at the Canadian Super League’s Eastern Canadian rugby playoffs in Halifax.
Game time is 5 p.m. at St. Francis Field in the city’s south end.
The Abbies lost a pair of close games to the Newfoundland Rock in St. John’s, N.L., on the weekend to close out the regular season.
The Rock won the opener 38-23 and the second contest 19-12.
Newfoundland led the first game 31-0 at the half. Sheldon Cudmore had two tries for the Abbies while Alex Forrest had the other. Ryan Lloyd had a pair of penalty kicks while Alex Hall added a convert.
The Rock erased a 5-0 deficit at the half in the second game en route to victory.
Liam Carter and Charlie Waddell scored tries for P.E.I. with Lloyd adding a convert.
The Rock finished first in the Atlantic Division with a 5-1 record.
The Abbies and the Nova Scotia Keltic each had 3-3 records but Nova Scotia earned second place based on bonus points, which are awarded to teams which score more than four tries in a game or lose by seven or fewer points.
The Keltic and New Brunswick Spruce will play in the other quarter-final Friday at 7 p.m. with the Rock and Quebec having byes into Saturday’s semifinal.
