Panthers clinch first-round bye in AUS women's hoops

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The UPEI Panthers completed a perfect 10-0 season on home court and clinched a first-round bye with a 77-65 victory over the Acadia Axewomen Saturday in Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball action.

Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 16 points, five rebounds and five assists to pace the attack while Karla Yepez had 15 points, five rebounds and three assists and Reese Baxendale scored 12 points. Carolina Del Santo hauled in 17 rebounds and blocked three shots while Kimeshia and Annabelle Charron each scored 11 points off the bench. Henry was 3-for-4 from three-point land as the Panthers hit 60 per cent of their shots from downtown.

Haley McDonald had 23 points, three rebounds and three assists for Acadia while Lanae Adams had 13 points and six rebounds. Shalyn Field chipped in 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench for the Axewomen.

Acadia led 24-14 after the first quarter but the game was tied at 36 at the half. UPEI outscored the Axewomen 21-10 in the third to take a 57-46 advantage to the fourth.

UPEI (16-2) is tied with Cape Breton (17-2) with 44 points for first place in the conference standings. Third-place Acadia (13-6) has dropped three straight games.

The Panthers complete the regular season on the road next weekend with games at Cape Breton on Friday and St. FX on Saturday.
