CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Basketball players Lexi MacInnis and Jace Colley were named the female and male athletes of the year, respectively, at the recent Holland College Hurricanes awards presentations in Charlottetown.
MacInnis, a Stratford native, had a strong season despite playing for a rebuilding team that struggled in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA).
In 21 regular season games, MacInnis averaged 14 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists, leading the Hurricanes in scoring and the conference in three-point shots made (47).
She was named to the ACAA all-conference first team and was recognized as a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) academic all-Canadian. She won the Hurricanes women’s basketball MVP as well.
Colley had a tremendous season and helped the Hurricanes earn a seventh straight ACAA title.
The East Preston, N.S., native, scored 23.5 points per game and averaged eight rebounds, while shooting 61.3 from the field and tallying 22 blocks, 77 assists and 27 steals.
Colley was named the CCAA men’s basketball player of the year, CCAA all-Canadian, ACAA player of the year and to the ACAA all-conference first team. He also earned the men’s basketball MVP.
MacInnis and Colley won women’s and men’s rookies of the year award last season.
Abby Hyndman (women’s volleyball) and Shunya Kobayashi (men’s soccer) were awarded the female and male rookies of the year after fine first seasons.
Hyndman, from Charlottetown, led the ‘Canes in kills (176) and aces (40) as Holland College finished second at the ACAA championship. For her work, she was named ACAA rookie of the year, earned a spot on the ACAA all-conference second team and recognized as a CCAA academic all-Canadian.
Kobayashi led Holland College in goals (seven) and points (20) as the squad won the ACAA title then hosted the nationals where the school finished seventh. The Yachiyo, Japan, native was named a CCAA all-Canadian, CCAA academic all-Canadian, the ACAA player of the year and made the ACAA all-conference first team.
Lori-Beth Dwyer, who’s stepping down from women’s volleyball head coach, won coach of the year.
Holland College won the CCAA Academic All-Canadian Recognition Award for the fifth-straight year and 10 of its athletes were named CCAA all-Canadians.
