Highlanders beat Storm in overtime in NBL action


CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Bruce Massey made a layup at the buzzer as the Cape Breton Highlanders defeated the Island Storm 116-115 in overtime Saturday in National Basketball League of Canada action at the Eastlink Centre.

Kenny Jones had 25 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Highlanders while Aaron Redpath chipped in 23 points, six boards and six assists. Massey finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks while six Highlanders hit double digits in scoring.

Jarrell Tate had 24 points on 10-for-14 shooting to pace the host Storm while adding 10 rebounds, six assists, a steal and a block. Russell Byrd had 24 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in front of 1,263 fans while Sampson Carter (22 points and 15 rebounds) and Tyree White (10 points and 12 rebounds) each had double doubles.

The Storm led 26-23 after the first quarter, 56-50 at the half and 86-81 heading to the fourth before being outscored 26-21 to force overtime.

Cape Breton improved to 3-4 while the Storm falls to 2-2 with both losses coming to the Highlanders.

The Storm hits the road for the first time this season with games Friday and Saturday in St. John’s, N.L., with the Edge. The Highlanders return to the court Thursday when it host the Halifax Hurricanes at 10 a.m.
