Prince Edward Classic attracts top athletes to Charlottetown for three-day competition

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Delta Hotel in Charlottetown will be hopping this weekend with 435 athletes from across the region registered to take part in the Prince Edward Classic hosted by the Island Gymnastics Academy.

The Classic – which has been run annually since 1996 – is considered to be one of the premier gymnastics competitions in Eastern Canada. This year, 15 clubs will be sending their athletes to compete, including gymnasts from the four Island clubs – the Summerside Saultos, Victory Gymnastics Centre, St. Louis Gymnos and the host Academy.

Beginning this morning and running through Sunday morning, there will be eight sessions in total, with the higher-level gymnasts in the region competing on Saturday evening. This will include gymnasts who will compete at the forthcoming Canada Games in Red Deer, Alta., as well as those looking to make qualifying scores for national championships later this year.

“The Classic has become established as one of the premier meets in the region and we are looking forward once again to hosting the finest young gymnasts in Atlantic Canada,” said Academy executive director and meet director Nick Murray.

“The level of gymnastics continues to rise, not just here on the Island, but throughout Atlantic Canada. There will be some real stars of tomorrow competing this weekend and we are excited to showcase such outstanding talent.”
Schedules and results for the Classic can be found on the Academy’s website.
