CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — As soon as Gettin Messi found the front end it was clear sailing as he captured the fastest division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Thursday at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Mike McGuigan was in the driver’s seat behind the championship trotter in his $5,700 three-year-old trotting division as Gettin Messi stopped the clock in 1:59.1. Len McGuigan trains the son of Armbro Barrister for owner Jamie Whalen of Avondale.
Mile Hill Willie was a popular winner in his split, winning in 1:59.2 as the heavy favourite for driver Gilles Barrieau and owner-trainer Paul Morrison of Cardigan.
The other $5,700 P.E.I. Colt Stakes three-year-old bout was won by Lil Miss Winnie, who capitalized on breaks in stride by race favourites Thelastonestanding (Brian MacPhee) and Ya Boy Bear (Marc Campbell). With those two out of it, the Ralph Annear-trained Lil Miss Winnie cruised to a 2:01.4 win for driver Kenny Arsenault and owner Steven Sorrie of Montague.
In two-year-old P.E.I. Colt Stakes trot action, Mabou Ridge continued his divisional dominance for trainer-driver Clare MacDonald and owner Arnold Rankin of Antigonish, N.S. The Armbro Barrister colt trotted to a new lifetime best of 2:01.3 in the $7,700 stake.
The other rookie trot division saw Tad The Stud filly Dusty Lane Manney prevail in a maiden score of 2:05.4 for driver Walter Cheverie, trainer Joe Baxter and Nova Scotia owners Danica Ellis, Sheila Clarke, Mark Dean and Ray Cruz.
Live racing continues Saturday in Charlottetown featuring a doubleheader of P.E.I. Colt Stakes races in pacing action. Post times are 12:30 and 6:30 p.m.
