WILMOT VALLEY, P.E.I. — Dual-sport athlete Paige Deighan is going to play for the Holland College Hurricanes this fall.
The Wilmot Valley native will start as a midfielder for the ’Canes soccer team before transitioning to the ice as a centre with the women’s hockey squad.
“Holland College is a great fit for me,” she said. “I am looking forward to beginning the human services program as well as playing soccer for the Hurricanes. I am excited about playing at the collegiate level with a new group of teammates.”
Deighan won a P.E.I. under-18 premier league soccer championship with Summerside United and was a Prince Edward Island School Athletic Association all-star while serving as a co-captain with the Three Oaks Axewomen.
“I am able to anticipate plays well, seeing the field both offensively and defensively,” she said. “I have a very competitive nature and will bring my best effort to every single game and practice.”
Holland College is bringing back women’s hockey this season.
The Hurricanes will play in the Eastern Canadian Women’s Hockey League, which took a one-year hiatus in 2018-19 after UNB rejoined the Atlantic University Sport. Cape Breton and Acadia will also play in the league during the upcoming season. Holland College will play its home games in Montague.
Deighan played hockey at the Canada Games in late February in Red Deer, Alta.
“Playing Canada Games hockey, she knows what it takes to play at a high level,” said Hurricanes women’s soccer coach Kris McKinnon. “This experience, paired with her excellent work ethic, will allow her to be a valuable member of our program.”
Holland College’s women’s soccer team went 8-3-1 during the 2018 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season and lost in the semifinal. They are aiming for their fifth ACAA championship this season.
