ANTIGONISH, N.S. – Centre Carolina Del Santo went for 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the UPEI Panthers to a convincing 85-53 victory over St. FX to begin the 2018 portion of the Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball season.
Kiera Rigby had 16 points and Jane McLaughlin 13 in the win, which was worth four points in the standings.
Centre Kendra Smith had a team-high nine points off the bench for the X-Women, who shot 28 per cent (19-for-68) from the field.
The Panthers did their damage early holding quarter leads of 25-10, 40-20 and 63-37.
UPEI improved to 3-5 while St. FX falls to 0-8.
The Panthers host Saint Mary’s Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.
Men’s
Samy Mohamed had a game-high 26 points but it wasn’t enough as the UPEI Panthers dropped a 30-point loss at St. FX.
Mohamed, the fifth-year guard, went 7-for-13 from behind the arc. D’Adrian Allen had 15 points and Milorad Sedlarevic 12 in the 102-72 loss.
Justin Andrew had 19 points for St. FX while Mark Fernandes chipped in 14 and Nick Russell had 12.
St. FX improved to 4-4 while UPEI fell to 0-8. The Panthers host Saint Mary’s at 8 p.m. for games on Friday and Saturday.
