The Charlottetown Bluephins Aquatic Club, with 12 swimmers competing, landed in seventh spot overall at the Ken Dunn Nova Scotia Provincial Championships recently.

Charlie Morse and Alexa McQuaid led the way for the Island club.

McQuaid broke the women’s 50m freestyle provincial record, taking home a silver medal in the event. She also set a provincial record in the women’s 200m free, and added to her medal haul with third-place finishes in the 200m breast and 100m fly. Morse took home three gold medals – men’s 50m free; 100m free (setting a new provincial record); and the 200m freestyle event.

Courtney McBride had a very strong meet, setting new provincial records in the girls 13/14 age group and adding to her qualifying times for Canadian junior championships in Winnipeg where she will be competing at the end of the month.

David Du, in the boys 13/14 age group, had season-best and medal performances in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststrokes. Also swimming fast was 11-year-old Maggie Hu who set new provincial records in the girls 11/12 age group for the 100m free and 50m fly events.

Rounding out the individual medal winners were Bluephins swimmers, Jordyn Bowness (silver) and Amy Wheatley (bronze) in the women’s 50m fly final. Charley Russell, Isaac Hendrickson, Aidan Harrison, Holly Nickerson and Lily Robichaud-McLeod also competed over the weekend setting new personal best times and adding to the swim team’s points total.

The weekend of fast swimming was highlighted by the stellar performances of the Bluephins women’s relay team that came home with three medals and three new provincial age group records. Members of the team include Alexa McQuaid, Courtney McBride, Amy Wheatley and Jordyn Bowness.

After junior nationals in Winnipeg in late July, swimmers will break for a few weeks before returning to the pool in September.
