SYDNEY, N.S. – The Cape Breton Capers defeated the UPEI Panthers by the identical 3-0 score for the second time in a week played Saturday in Sydney, N.S.

The win leaped the Capers (4-0-1) to first place while the loss kept the Panthers (1-2-2) tied with Memorial for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic University Sport conference.

It was a game of two halves with a strong wind blowing north to south all afternoon. It was the Capers who took advantage with the wind at their back in the fourth minute when Euan Bauld headed home a ball from a well-taken corner kick.
The Panthers held on in the first half and managed to keep the score to 1-0.

With the wind at their back, UPEI came out strong early in the second half but were unable to crack a big, solid back-line that gave away no scoring chances to the Panthers. The Capers scored their insurance goal in the 66th minute when Stuart Heath capitalized on a goal-mouth scramble, again from a corner kick.
Cape Breton’s third goal came in the 79th minute from the foot of Joel Eckbert Ayensa from the penalty spot.
“Well, what can you say? We gave up two goals on a corner and a penalty,” said Panthes head coach Lewis Page. “It’s frustrating when you give up goals like that instead of open play. We’ve definitely got to create more chances and score on chances we do create. You can’t win on defence alone.”

The Panthers will now have to reset and prepare on short notice as the travel to Antigonish, N.S., on Sunday to take on a strong St. FX side. Game time is 3:15 p.m.
