CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Team P.E.I.’s Week 1 athletes are home after competing at the Canada Games in Red Deer, Alta.
The team landed at the Charlottetown Airport at 1:40 p.m. after delays leaving Calgary pushed back their arrival.
“I’m really glad to be home,” a tired Jack Campbell said after getting his luggage.
The 15-year-old Souris native captained the boys’ hockey team and led the tournament in scoring with 17 points as Team P.E.I. went 5-1-1 to finish ninth.
“It was awesome,” he said. “It was the best time of my life and I am glad I got to spend it with all 20 of these guys and the coaches. It was a great experience.”
Julie Gilman, Team P.E.I.’s assistant chef de mission, said the athletes, coaches and mission staff members were excited to land in P.E.I. after a long day of travelling.
“The team is in good spirits,” she said. “Team P.E.I. members are excited to be home, just a little bit later than expected.”
She said it was a cold, but wonderful, week in Red Deer with good competition and noted the host society is doing a great job. She said Island athletes turned in strong performances, including numerous personal bests, while cheering on their peers.
“The spirit was really wonderful,” she said.
