HALIFAX, N.S. – The UPEI Panthers are going to the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s basketball semifinal.
Rookie Reese Baxendale scored 30 points to lead the Panthers to a 76-70 victory over the UNB Varsity Red Friday at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax. Her backcourt partner, Jenna Mae Ellsworth, scored 28 while centre Carolina Del Santo scored nine points to go with 19 rebounds.
Hannah Currie had 24 points for the Reds while Laura Kaye chipped in 20.
The Reds led 16-10 after the first quarter and 34-29 at the half, but the Panthers went on a 22-14 run in the third quarter to take a 51-48 advantage to the final 10 minutes.
The Panthers will play the second-seeded Cape Breton Capers Saturday at 3 p.m. with a chance to reach Sunday's final. Saint Mary’s, which beat Memorial on Friday, plays Acadia at 1 p.m. in the other semifinal.
