Wild, Knights drop openers at major midget showcase

KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — The Island’s two major midget hockey teams look to get into the win column today as they complete the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Major Midget Hockey League Showcase.

The Saint John Vito’s blanked the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Knights 5-0 and the Northern Moose defeated the host Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild 4-3 Saturday at Credit Union Centre in Kensington.

Here’s a recap of the two games.

Saint John 5, Charlottetown 0

Carter McCluskey and Trey Hatt each scored twice to pace the Vito’s while Jake Kyle had one. Jack Dickie had three helpers in the victory.

Jeremi Delaquis turned in a 24-save shutout while Jack Howatt stopped 21 shots in the loss.

Saint John improved to 15-20-0 while Charlottetown is 11-18-5. The Knights play the first-place Moncton Flyers (32-3-2) Sunday at 4 p.m. Fredericton defeated Moncton 3-2 on Saturday.

Northern 4, Kensington 3

Anthony Parent scored the winner with 51 seconds remaining in regulation as the Moose defeated the Wild.

Jake Parker, Marc-Andre Gaudet and Simon Olivier Savoie also scored in the victory.

Reid Peardon scored twice for Kensington while Donovan Arsenault had a goal and an assist.

Keiran Gallant, playing his first game of the season with the Wild after starting the year in major junior with the Charlottetown Islanders, had two helpers. Crosby Andrews and Landon Clow also chipped in an assist.

Pierre-Vincent Guignard stopped 29 shots for the victory while Jonah Arbing made 22 saves in the loss.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first while Northern took a 3-1 lead to the third.

The Moose improved to 12-17-4 while the Wild is 19-11-3. Kensington plays Fredericton (17-16-1) Sunday at 11 a.m.

Saint John plays Northern at 1:30 p.m.
