Volleyball Hurricanes go undefeated in matches with Dragons, Chargers

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Holland College Hurricanes volleyball teams won all four Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season games they played during the weekend.

The women picked up straight-sets wins over the Sainte Anne Dragons on Saturday in Charlottetown before defeating the Crandall Chargers Sunday in Moncton. The men picked up a pair of wins over the Dragons on Saturday and Sunday at home in three and four sets, respectively.

Here’s a recap of the weekend’s action.

Women

The ’Canes won Saturday’s women’s game 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-21).

Kateia Barenaba led the attack for the Hurricanes with six kills while Calandra Bychyk and Kali Wilson each added five.

Kalie MacKinnon dished out a match-high 17 assists while Bychyk led the defensive effort with nine digs. Sophia Blanchard added eight digs, three kills and an ace while Jenna MacFarlane added six digs and three assists.

MacKinnon also led the way from the service line with five aces with Barenaba adding four and Wilson, Bychyk, and Dana Trainor all adding three.

The Hurricanes defeated the Chargers 3-0 (25-13, 25-14 and 25-19).

Wilson, Barenaba and Amanda de Carvalho Brito all had six kills to lead a balanced Hurricanes attack. Blanchard added five while Bychyk had four and MacFarlane had three.

MacKinnon dished out a match-high 20 assists along with eight digs and an ace. Wilson led the defensive effort with 11 digs with Blanchard and Bychyk each having seven.

The ‘Canes (16-0) lead the conference while the Dragons are 2-15 and the Chargers are 0-17.

The Hurricanes complete the regular season in Halifax this weekend. They play the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics (10-6) Saturday at 2 p.m. before taking on the King’s Blue Devils (9-7) on Sunday at noon.

The ’Canes will enter the ACAA championship as the No. 1 seed and have earned a bye to the semifinal on Saturday, Feb. 29, in Sackville, N.B.

Men

Holland College won Saturday’s match 3-0 (25-17, 26-24 and 25-23).

Simon Archibald led the offence with 12 kills while Nick Blewett added eight and Riley O’Keefe, Gordon Veitch and Cole Mackey all added five.

Brandon Hastings had a match-high 33 assists while Alex Joudrey led the defensive effort with 16 digs. Mackey added seven digs with Hastings adding six and Veitch five.

In the rematch on Sunday, the ‘Canes 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-17, 27-25).

Archibald again led the ’Canes with 11 kills with Blewett adding eight and Mackey chipping in with six. Hastings had 29 assists while Mackey had 12 digs. Archibald and Joudrey both had 11 digs with Hastings adding nine.

Holland College improved to 6-8, jumping to second place in the standings. The Dragons (5-9) are tied with the UNBSJ Seawolves for third. With the victories, the ’Canes are guaranteed to finish as either the second or third seed entering the ACAA championships in Sackville, N.B.

The Hurricanes finish the regular season by hosting the St. Thomas Tommies (12-2) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
