UPEI hockey teams win, hoops squads lose Saturday in AUS action

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Shaylin McFarlane of Miramichi, N.B., stopped all 18 shots she faced Saturday for her first Atlantic University Sport (AUS) shutout as the UPEI Panthers defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleues 1-0 in women’s hockey action.

Summerside’s Taylor Gillis scored the lone goal of the game unassisted at 6:10 of the third period at MacLauchlan Arena. She now has five goals on the campaign.

The win was the Panthers’ third straight victory to improve to 9-2-0 while Moncton is 2-8-1.

Melodie Arsenault stopped 13 shots in the loss. UPEI was 0-for-1 on the power play but killed all five of Moncton’s chances with the man advantage.

The Panthers host the St. FX X-Women (6-4-1) today at 3 p.m.

Men’s hockey

The Panthers have won back-to-back games for the first time this season in AUS men’s hockey.

Rookie Darian Pilon had two power-play goals as part of his first career hat trick at the university level in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax.

Troy Lajeunesse also scored for the visitors. Doug Blaisdell, Conor MacEachern and Kameron Kielly each had two assists while Kyle Maksimovich had one.

Chandler Yakimoqicz from Campbell Pickard scored a shorthanded goal for Dal.

Simon Hofley had 31 saves for the win while Connor Hicks stopped 35 shots in the loss.

The Panthers went 2-for-5 on the power play and killed all five of Dalhousie’s chances with the man advantage. UPEI, which held 2-0 and 3-0 period leads, improved to 4-6-2 while Dalhousie is 2-8-2.

The Panthers host Moncton (5-4-3) Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball

The St. FX X-Women used a big second half to hand the Panthers their first loss of the AUS women’s basketball season Saturday in Antigonish, N.S.

The Panthers led 23-19 after the first quarter and 45-38 at the half, but the host squad outscored the visitors 29-16 in the third to take a 67-61 advantage to the third en route to a 96-88 victory.

The Panthers played without centre Carolina Del Santo and guard Jenna Mae Ellsworth only played 16 minutes, including two in the second half. St. FX is 1-2 while UPEI is 3-1.

Aliyah Fraser and Kimberly Kingsbury led the X-Women with 27 and 26 points, respectively.

Reese Baxendale had 22 points, including 11 from the free-throw line, while rookie Lauren Rainford had 17 points and third-year Lauren Fleming had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ellsworth had 12 points.

The Panthers host the Dalhousie Tigers Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. each night.

Men’s basketball

Azaro Roker had 22 points to lead the St. FX X-Men to a 88-75 victory over the Panthers Saturday in AUS men’s basketball action.

Dondre Reddick had 16 points off the bench in the win as six players scored in double digits.

Jamesley Jerome had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the Panthers while rookie Elijah Miller had 14 points, 10 assists, three steals and two rebounds. Dakelle Brooks scored 14 points while Samuel Campbell had 10.

St. FX hit 55 per cent of its field-goal attempts and went 8-for-14 (57 per cent) from three-point territory. The Panthers shot 42 per cent from the field and 31 per cent from downtown but only made four trips to the free-throw line while the home side was at the charity stripe 19 times.

UPEI did force 22 turnovers while committing 10 less.

The X-Men are 2-1 while the Panthers are 1-3. The Panthers host the Tigers Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. each night.
