UNB defeats UPEI 3-2 in men's hockey

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Tyler Boland scored twice, including the game-winning goal, Saturday as the UNB Reds defeated the UPEI Panthers 3-2 in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action at MacLauchlan Arena.

Former Charlottetown Islanders captain Oliver Cooper broke a 1-1 tie nine minutes into the third period just after the Panthers had killed a penalty. Boland made it a two-goal lead 2:18 later.

Jesse Sutton deflected a shot for a power-play goal to make it 3-2 with 4:38 left. The Panthers made a late push for the equalizer, but couldn’t cash in.

Mark Rassell, Brady Gilmour, Samuel Dove-McFalls, Marcus McIvor and Matt Murphy had assists for UNB.

Darian Pilon scored UPEI’s other goal while his twin brother Drake Pilon had an assist on the marker. Troy Lajeunesse, Kyle Maksimovich and Owen Headrick also had helpers.

Samuel Harvey, who played for the Memorial Cup champion Rouyn-Noranda Huskies last season, made 22 saves for the win while Simon Hofley stopped 29 shots in the loss.

UNB improved to 3-1-0 while UPEI is 1-2-1.
