STRATFORD, P.E.I. — A rematch of the 2019 Kings County Baseball League final will determine this year’s champs.
The Alley Stratford Athletics and Morell Chevies both completed sweeps of their best-of-five semifinals to return to the league final. The A’s won the 2019 title in six games.
Game 1 of this year’s best-of-seven series is set for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Stratford.
Here’s a look at Wednesday’s contests.
Athletics 9, Clippers 8
The regular season champion A’s defeated the Cardigan Clippers 9-8 in Stratford to sweep the semifinal.
Stratford scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to regain the lead after the Clippers scored six runs in the top of the sixth to erase a 7-2 deficit.
Gabe Penalver earned the victory in relief of starter Johnny Arsenault. Dean Carroll was tagged with the loss in relief of starter Sam Walsh.
Ryne MacIsaac led the Athletics’ offence, going 3-for-4, while Shawn MacDougall was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Josh MacDonald went 2-for-4 with a solo home run for Cardigan while Charles MacLellan was also 2-for-4.
Chevies 7, Bombers 0
The Chevies, who finished the regular season in second place, shut down the Peakes Tee Bombers en route to a 7-0 victory at Memorial Field.
Tanner MacLean threw a one-hitter for the victory. He struck out four and walked three.
Josh Coffin took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits in four innings. He walked one, hit two batters and struck out three. Jack MacKenzie allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two in two innings of relief.
Duncan Picketts gave Morell the lead with a ground out in the bottom of the first inning. The Chevies extended their lead in the bottom of the third with three base hits to begin the inning from Taylor Larkin, Scott Harper and Logan Gallant. Picketts then plated two with a bases-loaded single and Darcy Affleck drove in three with a double.
Gallant was 3-for-4 with a run to pace the Chevies’ offence while Larkin and Harper were each 2-for-3. Larkin scored one, drove in one and was hit by a pitch while Harper scored two runs.
Tyson McInnis had the Bombers’ lone hit.
