SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The first and only crop of Steelhead Hanover was out to impress Thursday evening in Atlantic Sires Stakes action at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
Steel Reefer took first the first bite out the Atlantic Sires Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts, winning his $12,880 A division in 1:57.2 for trainer-driver Gilles Barrieau. The Steelhead Hanover rookie is owned by Wayne MacRae of Fall River, N.S., and Robert Tilley and Gary Mott of Saint John, N.B.
It was a Steelhead Hanover triactor in that division as Mr Rielly (Corey MacPherson) was beat by a neck for second while Dollars And Spence (Redmond Doucet) cut out the mile to finish third in a dead heat with Cougar Hall colt Moneyorroses (Steven Shepherd).
Another Steelhead Hanover colt, Woodmere Stealdeal, easily disposed of his maiden status in the second $12,880 A division, winning by eight lengths in 1:57.1 for driver Marc Campbell, trainer Danny Romo and Nova Scotia owners Kevin Dorey of Middle Sackville and Robert Sumarah of Halifax. Woodmere Alvin (Mike McGuigan) was second while Bettim Again (Darren Crowe) completed the $112.60 triactor ticket.
Silver Jake won a $2,500 Atlantic Sires Stakes B division for two-year-old pacing colts in 2:00.3 for driver David Dowling and trainer Devon Wallace. The other B split was claimed by Class Hero (MacPherson) in 2:04 from the Greg Weatherbee stable.
In a rarity in Island racing, a pair of siblings born outside the region both won races on the same card. Shes In The Moment, by Control The Moment, had a maiden-breaking win in Race 1 in 1:58.3 for trainer-driver Campbell then her half-brother Cowboy Logic, by Western Ideal, cruised the oval in an open-length score in 1:56.3 for driver Steven Shepherd and trainer Harold Shepherd. Both horses are out of the Art Major mare Sara Sue.
The Shepherd duo also celebrated a win with Harbourlite Jerry in 1:57.4 in Race 9 overnight action.
