Sherwood defeats Summerside in deciding game of junior C quarter-final

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Sherwood Metros are going to the second round of the Razzy’s Prince Edward Island Junior C Hockey League playoffs.

They defeated the Summerside Cover All Construction Crunch 4-1 Monday to win the best-of-five quarter-final 3-2. The Metros will face the first-place Tignish Aces in the best-of-five semifinal starting Friday at 8 p.m. in Tignish. Game 2 will be played Monday at 7:20 p.m. at Cody Banks Arena in Charlottetown.

Michael Jenkins’ shorthanded goal 11 minutes into the second period Monday was the winner against the Crunch.

Sammy Docherty, Nick Brown and Marc Cummiskey (empty net) also scored in the win.

Brown, Cummiskey, Cameron Callaghan, Patrick Kenny, Kyle Kennedy, Jake Lafferty and Hunter Boudreau each had an assist in the victory.

Aaron Feehan from Dylan Mugridge scored a power-play goal with 2:28 left in the second period for the Crunch.

Sumner Docherty made 35 saves for the victory while Devon Newberry stopped 39 shots in the loss.

Sherwood held 1-0 and 2-1 period leads. Summerside was 1-for-6 on the power play and killed all four of Sherwood’s chances with the man advantage.

The North River Flames have a 2-1 series lead over the Georgetown Tri County Insulfoam IceDogs in the other semifinal with Game 4 slated for 8 p.m. Friday in Georgetown.
