Strong attention was given to establishing a fair blend of gender and geography when selecting nine senior volunteers to oversee critical components of the 2023 Canada Winter Games in P.E.I.

Ability and credibility were also given as key attributes of these board of management members, which were announced this week by Games co-chairman Wayne Carew.

Carew said it was important to draw the senior volunteers from across the province since the goal is for the Canada Games to have a Prince Edward Islandwide involvement and not be viewed as simply the Summerside Games and Charlottetown Games.

The nine senior volunteers selected to serve on the 2023 Canada Winter Games board of management, along with McFeely, Carew, CEO Kyle Dudley, COO Edna Flood, Canada Games Council’s Kelly-Ann Paul and P.E.I. representatives John Morrison and Cindy Harris, include: Blair Dunn, vice-president of finance and administration; Jonathan Ross, vice-president of revenue generation; Karolyn Godfrey, vice-president of visions, volunteers and community relations; Heather Howatt, vice-president of marketing and media; Harvey MacEwen, vice-president of capital projects, venues and overlay; Paul Power, vice-president of logistics and essential services; Tanya Gallant, vice-president of ceremonies and festivals; Janet Ellis, vice-president of sport and athletes village; and Kateri Coade, vice-president of protocol and mission services .

“Those people were selected because of their ability that they have already established either as volunteers or in their business or their job but also somebody that has tremendous organizational skills and, most importantly, somebody that can bring 20 or 30 planning volunteers along with them,’’ said Carew.

Meet the volunteers

  • The Guardian will be profiling each of the nine senior volunteers selected to the 2023 Canada Winter Games Board of Management over the coming months.

“We don’t get a do-over of this. We get one shot to do it right – and we will. We built an incredibly strong team.’’

Games co-chairman Brian McFeely says the quality of the senior volunteers is critical to the success of every Canada Games.

“We are so pleased that these folks have volunteered their tremendous expertise to the 2023 Canada Winter Games,’’ he said. “We are blessed to have such a group and look forward to working with them to provide a world class experience for all involved in the Games.’’

Carew says the board of management will be building up over the next three to six months at least a couple hundred senior planning volunteers that will be tasked with collectively recruiting thousands of volunteers.

Roles requiring the largest number of volunteers include crowd control needed at the many sporting venues as well as at the opening and closing ceremonies. Drivers are another high-volume volunteer function.
