ALBERTON, P.E.I. — Three goals in the first five minutes of the 2019-2020 regular season carried the Western Wind to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Mid-Isle Wildcats at the Jacques Cartier Arena on Wednesday night.
The Alberton-based Wind, the P.E.I. Bantam AAA Female Hockey League’s defending champions, were up 3-0 after the first period and all of the game’s scoring was completed by the end of the second period.
Kristyn Taylor led the way for the Wind with a pair of first-period goals. Isabelle Richards scored what held up as the winning goal 3:29 into the first period.
Hailey Williams was the only Wind player awarded an assist in the game and that came on the game-winning goal.
Sophie Crabbe set up Karlee Williams for the Wildcats' only goal at 1:53 of the second period.
Cyriah Richard picked up the goaltending win while Shelbie Masters and Jenay Spence shared the netminding duties for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats picked up three minors and a double minor for head contact while the Wind received one minor.
Mid-Isle is back on the road Saturday when they visit Central Storm at Simmons Arena in Charlottetown at 4:50 p.m.
