CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A professional basketball league is coming to the Maritimes, but not many details are currently available.

The Eastern Canadian Basketball League (ECBL) has created a bit of a buzz in recent days with some of its social media postings. It calls itself the premier professional basketball league in the Maritime provinces, but who is behind the league has not been made public.

Robbie Robinson, who played with the Island Storm of the National Basketball League of Canada last season, is the league’s senior marketing manager.

“I am excited to see what the ECBL can bring to the Maritime provinces,” Robinson said in a video released on the league’s Twitter account.

The California native is currently helping Tim Kendrick with his All Aspects Basketball program at the Murphy’s Pharmacies Community Centre.

The league said Saturday it will be approaching various regions about hosting franchises. They include Charlottetown and Summerside in Prince Edward Island, Halifax, Dartmouth, South Shore, Annapolis Valley, Sydney and Truro in Nova Scotia plus Fredericton, Moncton, Saint John and Miramichi in New Brunswick.

The league has a website and is accepting player and coaching applications.
