P.E.I.’s Smith rink opens play in championship round at Canadian junior curling championships Wednesday night

LANGLEY, B.C. — The Tyler Smith team from the Montague Curling Rink will open play in the championship round at the 2020 New Holland Canadian junior curling championships on Wednesday.
The Phil Gorveatt-coached Team Smith, which includes third stone Ryan Abraham, second stone Jake Flemming and lead Ryan Lowery, lost its final round-robin game to Manitoba Team Two by an 8-5 score on Tuesday to complete round-robin play at 5-1 (won-lost). P.E.I. finished second in Pool B behind Manitoba Team Two, which also is 5-1 but won the head-to-head meeting.
In championship round play Wednesday, Smith faces Saskatchewan at 6 p.m., and Thursday he faces Newfoundland and Labrador at 1 p.m., and Alberta at 11 p.m.
In women’s play at the under-21 championships, Prince Edward Islander Lauren Lenentine, who is playing the lead position, and her Manitoba teammates enter the championship round 6-0.
P.E.I.’s Lauren Ferguson rink from the Cornwall Curling Club split its games Tuesday, beating Nunavut 14-3 and losing to Northern Ontario 8-3, to go 1-5.
Ferguson, third stone Sydney Howatt, second stone Kristie Rogers and lead Rachel O’Connor, will play British Columbia in seeding pool action Wednesday at 11 p.m. Thursday, P.E.I. faces Northwest Territories at 1 p.m., and the Yukon at 6 p.m.
The winning teams will then represent Canada at the world junior championships in Russia.
