CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The P.E.I. Youth Selects proved they aren’t going to back down from older competition in the first game of the season Friday night in Charlottetown.
The Selects scored two runs on a Cody MacCormack double in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 5-3 deficit and send the contest with the Morell Chevies to extra innings. It was the first game of a doubleheader at Memorial Field that kicked off the Kings County Baseball League season.
Selects’ reliever Colby Huggan escaped a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth inning and the Selects would score the winning run on a Jake McEwan bases-loaded fielder’s choice in their half of the eighth to win 6-5.
Starter Jackson Sherren pitched five innings for the Selects before being relieved by Ethan Smith for two innings. Troy Coffin went five innings for the Chevies before giving way to Ben MacDougall.
Scott Harper and Nathan Jones led the Chevies with a pair of hits while Garrett Culleton and Connor Ellsworth paced the Selects with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Tanner MacLean struck out seven in six innings to lead the Chevies to an 8-3 win.
Brandon Langley took the loss, with relief from Chris MacDougall and Reese MacIsaac.
Sam Worth stroked a pair of doubles for the Selects, while Jones and Stephen O’Shea lead the Chevy hitters with two hits.
