KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — Ben Parent was the story of Sunday night’s Island Junior Hockey League game at Credit Union Centre in Kensington.
Parent stopped 47 of 48 shots, including 17 in the first period and 18 in the final 20 minutes, in backstopping the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers to a 2-1 win over the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings.
The win earned the Vipers a split of a holiday season home-and-home series between the two Island Junior Hockey League arch-rivals. The Red Wings won 5-4 in Abram-Village on Boxing Day.
Nick Trainor’s even-strength goal at 18:18 of the third period broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Vipers to victory. Blake Gallant’s power-play goal at 9:29 of the second period tied the game for Kensington, which played the game with 14 skaters, after the Red Wings’ Thomas Rennie opened the scoring t 3:17 of the middle frame.
Ryan Richards, Tayler Read,  Morgan Darbyson and Garrett Murray collected assists for the Vipers, who are now 9-7-1 (won-lost-overtime losses). Connor Morrissey picked up the lone helper for the league-leading Red Wings (14-2-2).
Cole Gallant faced 30 shots in Western’s goal.
The Vipers were assessed four of the game’s five minor penalties. Kensington was 1-for-1 on the power play while the Red Wings were 0-for-4.
