CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Major Under-18 Hockey League has postponed this weekend’s showcase in Charlottetown.

The league announced the decision on its Twitter account early Friday evening.

The league's six teams – host Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Knights, Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild, Northern Moose, Fredericton Caps, Saint John Vitos and Moncton Flyers – were all scheduled to play two games on Friday and Saturday.

The league announced early Friday morning that due to the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the Moncton area that the Flyers would not be participating, but the showcase would go ahead with the other five teams.

The Moncton area is now at orange alert that includes non-essential travel.

There were seven new cases announced in the Saint John area on Friday afternoon. That zone is transitioning to the orange level at midnight.

"As disappointing as this is, we feel it is important to have all our teams within the league present to showcase their talent and take part in this event," said league president Barry Thompson. "We also have to keep the health and safety of all our members in mind during these challenging times.

"We are exploring holding this year's showcase in the near future when it is appropriate and safe to do so following the guidance of our two working governments."

The purpose of the showcase was to provide scouts with an opportunity to watch three games each day under one roof.

The next scheduled games are to take place next weekend.
