MORELL, P.E.I. — The Morell Chevies scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Sunday to erase a 1-0 deficit en route to a 6-1 victory over the Peakes Bombers 6-1 to advance to the Kings County Baseball League finals.
They will meet The Alley Stratford Athletics in the championship series. Game 1 of the best-of-seven series is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Stratford.
In Morell on Sunday evening, the Bombers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Rob Phelan RBI double that scored Colin Myers, who had reached on a single. Morell starter Troy Coffin and Bombers lefty Josh Coffin would keep the bats silent until the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Taylor Larkin ignited the rally with a bunt single and Matt Barlow followed with his own single. Larkin would score the tying run on an RBI single by Logan Gallant.
Jarrod Laybolt walked to load the bases. With Dillon Doucette in to relieve Josh Coffin, Desi Doyle stroked a two-out single to centre field to score Barlow and Gallant. Laybolt would score the fourth run on a wild pitch.
The Chevies would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on Laybolt’s two-run double off Phelan.
Gallant replaced Troy Coffin with one out in the top of the seventh. After the Bombers loaded the bases, he coaxed a fly ball to Larkin in centre field to end the game and send the Chevies to the final.
Troy Coffin finished the night allowing a single run on five hits with three strikeouts. Josh Coffin surrendered three runs over four and a third innings to take the loss. Barlow and Scott Harper had two hits apiece to pace the Chevies while Colin Myers has a pair of hits for the Bombers.
