CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Mike Dillon’s name is attached to most of the Island’s top curling trophies.
He has won three P.E.I. junior titles, four P.E.I. men’s championships, one P.E.I. mixed title and two P.E.I. seniors’ championships during his 37-year competitive career.
He will be inducted into the Prince Edward Island Curling Hall of Fame and Museum Tuesday during a ceremony at the Charlottetown Curling Complex. He will be joined by John Likely, Shelley Muzika, Leslie MacDougall and Wayne Matheson.
Dillon started curling at the Belvedere Golf and Winter Club in 1976.
He won the Prince Edward Island Junior Men’s Curling Championship in 1982, playing second with skip Wade MacRae, his brother Paul Dillon at third and lead Roy Whitlock. The following year, the squad, this time with Mike Dillon and Whitlock switching roles, won the right to represent the province in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean, Que., at the 1983 Canada Games. Bob Johnston was the coach.
Also, in 1983, Dillon won his second junior title with MacRae skipping. Blair Weeks was the third, Paul Dillon played second and Mike Dillon threw lead stones.
Mike Dillon added his third junior title in 1984, this time with a new team. It consisted of skip Alan Brown, third Mark Butler, Dillon at second and lead Phillip Gorveatt. Dillon was awarded the Ken Watson sportsmanship trophy at the 1984 Canadian juniors, an award voted on by the players.
In 2003, Dillon won the Island’s men’s title, playing lead with skip Robert Campbell, third Kevin Champion and Gorveatt at second.
Two years later, he teamed up with skip Rod MacDonald, third Champion and second Gorveatt to win his second men’s title. They repeated in 2006.
Switching to second stone, Dillon was back in the winners’ circle in 2011, claiming the men’s title with skip Eddie MacKenzie, third Mike Gaudet and lead Alex MacFadyen.
Dillon played lead in 2004 with skip Kim Dolan, third Champion and second Marion MacAulay to win the mixed championship.
In 2017, Dillon claimed the seniors championship, playing second for skip Gorveatt. Champion was the third while Butler was the lead. Dillon, Gorveatt and Champion won the senior tournament in 2019 with Larry Richards as the second.
Dillon has been a lifetime volunteer at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, helping with the junior program, the ice and in many other capacities.
