McKenna has four-point night as Moncton beats Charlottetown

MONCTON, N.B. — Summerside’s Jeremy McKenna scored three power-play goals Saturday to lead the host Moncton Wildcats to a 5-1 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Mike Cyr and captain Jakob Pelletier also scored in the victory in front of 5,861 people at the Avenir Centre.

Cornwall’s Jordan Spence had three assists while Alexander Khovanov had four and singles went to Pelletier, McKenna and Benoit-Olivier Groulx.

Gaetan Jobin from Nikita Alexandrov and Cedric Desruisseaux accounted for the Islanders goal.

Olivier Rodrigue stopped 19 shots for the victory while Matthew Welsh was peppered with 45 shots in the Islanders’ crease.

Moncton, which held 1-0 and 3-0 period leads, went 3-for-7 on the power play and killed all three of Charlottetown’s chances with the man advantage.

The Wildcats improved to 7-0-1-0 in their last eight games and 34-12-1-0 on the season. Charlottetown is 25-21-5-0.
The Islanders head to Halifax Tuesday to play the Mooseheads (18-25-2-1) before hosting Victoriaville (19-22-5-4) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Sherbrooke (38-7-3-1) Saturday at 7 p.m.
