CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Soccer players Nicole McInnis and Kaito Yamamoto are this week’s Holland College Hurricanes athletes of the week.

McInnis, a fifth-year goalkeeper from Hazelbrook, was named an Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) second team all-star and led the ’Canes to a conference championship. At the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship in Edmonton last week, McInnis backstopped the ’Canes in both matches.

She stopped nine of 12 shots in a 3-0 loss to the No. 1-ranked Fanshawe College Falcons in quarter-final play and was named the player of the match. Holland College lost 2-0 to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks in the bronze medal quarter-final.

McInnis is enrolled in the open academic studies program.

Yamamoto, in his first year with the Hurricanes, entered the CCAA nationals in Oshawa, Ont., last week after being named to the conference’s first all-star team and winning a conference championship.

He was named the player of the match in the ’Canes first game at nationals – a 2-1 loss in penalty kicks to the Red Deer College Kings. Yamamoto had two goals on five shots in a 4-3 loss to the Douglas College Royals in the bronze quarter-final match before scoring twice more and adding an assist in a 3-0 victory over the Lethbridge College.

The Chiba, Japan, native is enrolled in the English for academic purposes program.
