FREDERICTON, N.B. — Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals’ third-year  forward Josh MacDonald helped his head coach reach a milestone on Thursday night.
MacDonald, an 18-year-old from Cornwall, scored his second goal of the game at 1:38 of overtime to give the Caps a 4-3 road win over the Fredericton Red Wings. The victory marked the 400th of Billy McGuigan’s coaching career in the Maritime Junior Hockey League.
The win was the eighth in a row and ninth in 10 games for the Capitals, who improved their league-best record to 32-5-1 (won-lost-overtime losses).
Before 1,106 fans at the Grant Harvey Centre in the New Brunswick capital, Zach Biggar (1-1) and Carson MacKinnon also scored for the Capitals. Kallum Muirhead (2), Brodie MacMillan, Jacob Arsenault and Cam Roberts drew assists.
Ethan Stuckless (2) and Nathan Kelly (1-1) answered for the Red Wings (21-14-3).
There was no scoring in the first period and the teams were tied 1-1 after the second. Each team held a one-goal lead in the third period – the Red Wings were up 2-1 and the Caps took a 3-2 advantage.
The shots-on-goal totals were even 31-31. Dominik Tmej earned the goaltending win over Jack Grant.
The game’s three stars were:
1. Josh MacDonald (Caps), 2. Ethan Stuckless (Red Wings), 3. Jack Grant (Red Wings).
The Capitals move on to visit the Grand Falls Rapids (12-21-4) on Friday night.
