SAINT JOHN, N.B. — The Charlottetown Islanders scored three third-period goals to pull away from the Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday night.
The Islanders led 1-0 after the first and second periods en route to a 4-1 victory in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game, played before 3,711 fans at Harbour Station. It was the first of a two-game weekend series in the Port City that will conclude on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Cedric Desruisseaux scored twice to lead the Islanders, who received a goal and an assist from both Brett Budgell and Liam Peyton. Thomas Casey added two assists.
Josh Lawrence netted the lone Saint John goal.
Winning goaltender Matthew Welsh turned aside 26 of 27 shots while Zachary Bouthillier made 27 saves on 30 shots for the Sea Dogs. The Islanders’ fourth goal was scored into an empty net in the game’s final minute.
The Islanders’ scored the game’s lone power-play goal. Each team had four opportunities with the man advantage.
The game’s three stars were:
