CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Charlottetown Islanders will pick at the beginning of the third round in Saturday’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft.
The Isles received a third-round pick from the Sherbrooke Phoenix as part of the return for defenceman Xavier Bernard in the Dec. 15 deal. That pick originally was shown at the end of the round (58th overall) but the deal was always to be for a compensation pick (39th overall) Sherbrooke would receive before the draft. The Phoenix received the compensation pick for defenceman Cameron Whynot not reporting to the squad after being selected in the first round of the 2019 draft.
Whynot, a Nova Scotian, was traded along with a third-round pick in 2021 to the Halifax Mooseheads in August for forward Xavier Parent.
The flip of third-round picks was announced on Wednesday when the trade window opened. It was the Islanders’ lone move on the day.
Charlottetown’s top three picks are in the second, third and fourth rounds and are 22nd, 39th and 76th overall. Charlottetown has 10 selections in the sixth-14th rounds.
