SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Matthew Welsh stopped 40 shots Friday as the visiting Charlottetown Islanders defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 2-1 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League play.
Cole Edwards’ ninth goal of the season was the winner while captain Brendon Clavelle scored his first of the season to give the Isles a 1-0 lead 12:45 into the first. Nikita Alexandrov and Gaetan Jobin had the assist on Clavelle’s power-play goal while Edwards scored unassisted with 1:43 left in the opening frame.
Anderson MacDonald scored a power-play goal 8:39 into the third for the Sea Dogs. Maxim Cajkovic and Days Corner’s Charlie DesRoches had the helpers. Zachary Bouthillier stopped 27 shots in the loss.
Charlottetown was 1-for-4 on the power play and Saint John was 1-for-2.
The Islanders improved to 24-18-5-0 while Saint John dropped to 22-24-1-0. Charlottetown hosts the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Moncton Wildcats Sunday at 3 p.m.
