Islanders beat Saint John 6-2 to extend win streak to five

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Gaetan Jobin had two goals and an assist Thursday as the Charlottetown Islanders won their fifth straight game.

The Islanders defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 6-2 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action at the Eastlink Centre. It is the third straight game the Islanders, who have struggled to score for much of the season, have won by a 6-2 score.

Nikita Alexandrov and Cedric Desruisseaux each had a goal and an assist while rookie Justin Gill and veteran Thomas Casey also scored. Ethan Crossman had two assists while singles went to Will Trudeau, Brendon Clavelle, Drew Elliott, Cole Edwards and Lukas Cormier.

The home side built 3-0 and 5-0 period leads and made it 6-0 three minutes into the third on Gill’s fifth of the season.

Jeremie Poirier scored with 10:29 left in the third to break Matthew Welsh’s shutout bid and Brady Burns scored with 33 seconds to play. Josh Lawrence, Alex Drover and William Villeneuve each had an assist.

Welsh stopped 27 shots for the win while Noah Patenaude stopped 28 shots in the loss.

Charlottetown improved to 32-25-5-0 and opened up an eight-point lead on Saint John (30-31-1-0) for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The teams play again Friday in Charlottetown at 7:30 p.m.
