KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — An inability to finish off scoring opportunities cost the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild an extra point Saturday night.
The Wild held a 45-33 shots-on-goal advantage, including an 8-2 advantage in overtime, but the Saint John Vitos managed to pull out a 2-1 shootout win in the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Major Midget Hockey League game at Credit Union Centre in Kensington.
Both goaltenders – Jeremi Delaquis of the Vitos and the Wild’s Josh Smith – turned in strong performances and both made game-saving stops in overtime.
The shootout, however, belonged to the Vitos as Jake Kyte and Jack Dickie scored while the Wild’s Austin Arsenault and Donovan Arsenault were unable to solve Delaquis.
Duncan Picketts, assisted by Austin Arsenault and Alex Graham, scored for the Wild while Carter McCluskey set up Matthew McRae for Saint John as the teams exchanged first-period goals.
The Wild was assessed six of the game’s 10 minor penalties.
The result left the second-place Wild at 16-7-2 (won-lost-overtime losses) while the fifth-place Vitos improved to 11-17-0.
Kensington’s next game is on Saturday as the first-place Moncton Flyers (26-2-1) visit Credit Union Centre for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Games postponed
What was supposed to be a busy weekend for the Wild turned into just one game. Kensington’s game at the Cape Breton West Islanders on Friday night and at the Northern Moose (10-12-4) in Bathurst, N.B., on Sunday afternoon were both postponed due to the weather.
The Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Knights (7-16-3) also had two games postponed over the weekend as well. Charlottetown’s home game against Northern on Friday and road contest versus the Fredericton Caps (13-15-0) on Sunday will be rescheduled.
