Hurricanes select volleyball player and cross-country runner athletes of the week

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Volleyball player Sam Gerbig and cross-country runner Benjamin Nwaogazi-Awuja have been named the Holland Hurricanes’ athletes of the week for the week ending Nov. 3.
Gerbig, in her fourth-year of eligibility, led the Hurricanes to back-to-back straight-set victories on the road to open up the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season.

In Saturday’s win, Gerbig contributed four kills, four service aces and a dig, before adding six kills, six service aces and a dig in Sunday’s victory. Both matches took place in Church Point, N.S., versus the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons.
From Charlottetown, Gerbig plays the left-side position and is currently studying in the business administration program at Holland College.
Nwaogazi-Awuja, in his second year with the ‘Canes, finished third at Saturday’s ACAA cross-country running championships hosted by the Hurricanes at the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park in Brookvale.
The Hurricanes also won the men’s team championship for the first time in the program’s history.
From Imo State, Nigeria, Nwaogazi-Awuja currently studies in the electronics engineering technology program at Holland College.
A dual-athlete, Nwaogazi-Awuja is also a fullback for the men’s soccer Hurricanes, who are competing at the 2019 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national men’s soccer championships this week in Oshawa, Ont.
