SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Hockey P.E.I.’s officiating committee is looking to make history on P.E.I.

The provincial association is hoping to have all-female officiating crews oversee a female hockey jamboree at Credit Union Place in Summerside from Oct. 18 to 20. This event will feature female teams from the atom AA division through midget AAA.
“We’ve recently dedicated some resources in trying to attract, develop and retain female officials across the Island,” said Hockey P.E.I.’s manager of officiating, Paul Matte. “We’re fortunate to have hosted a very high-profile tournament last year in the U Sports female hockey championships, which is also being hosted again in Charlottetown this year.
“These events help to raise awareness around the female game as well as the officiating side of the game.”

Goal
Hockey P.E.I.’s goal for this jamboree is to bring in female officials from across the Island, and support them with travel costs, in an attempt at having every game officiated by all-female officiating crews. During the tournament, games will be supervised and constructive feedback provided by senior officials for development purposes.
The officiating committee will also take the opportunity to raise awareness around the abuse of officials and discuss how young officials can be negatively affected when exposed to abusive behaviour.
Minor hockey officials who wish to get involved with this event, but have not yet been notified, should contact their local referee in chief.
