Harness racing begins June 4 in Charlottetown without on-track fans

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Live harness racing will return to Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park on Thursday, June 4, but without on-track customers.

Red Shores made the announced Saturday afternoon, adding qualifying dates will be released soon.

“The safety and well-being of Islanders is our top priority,” the statement said. “In consultation with the P.E.I. Harness Racing Industry Association, public health officials and other stakeholders, Red Shores has developed a detailed plan to support the return of live standardbred horse racing on Prince Edward Island. This plan incorporates government and public health guidelines in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

Spectators won’t be allowed on the Red Shores property during live racing events until further notice. The races will be able to viewed and wagered on online via platforms like HPIBet.com.

The company and association said they will be enforcing restrictions for all race participants. They include physical distancing and the use of personal protective equipment. The full list of policies and procedures will be made available at redshores.ca

Post time on June 4 will be 6 p.m.

Before the pandemic, the season was scheduled to begin today – Saturday, May 2.
