CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Taylor Gillis and Filip Rydstrom are this week’s UPEI Panther Subway athletes of the week.
Gillis is a second-year forward with the women’s hockey team and a business major from Summerside. The Panthers split a pair of games during the weekend, but Gillis shone in Friday’s 3-0 win over Dalhousie with two goals scored five seconds apart. The Panthers (14-3-1) concluded the 2019 portion of their schedule in second place in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS).
“Taylor has a great ability to finish off plays,” said head coach Bruce Donaldson. “She sees the ice so well and leads the team with nine goals in 18 games. Taylor can seemingly slow down the game, so her moves are very hard to defend against. She has scored some of the prettiest goals in the AUS this term.”
Rydstrom is a third-year forward on the men’s hockey team and a business student from Stockholm, Sweden.
Rydstrom recorded two goals and an assist in a 6-5 win over the St. FX X-Men Friday night.
“Fil had a great game,” said head coach Forbes MacPherson. “He was a presence all over the ice. He took many key faceoffs and played both the power play and penalty kill.”
