Flames, Crunch earn junior C hockey victories

CORNWALL, P.E.I. — North River Flames defeated the Tignish Perry’s Construction Aces 4-3 in a shootout Saturday to take sole possession of first place in the Razzy’s Prince Edward Island Junior C Hockey League.

The Summerside Cover All Construction Crunch earned their first victory of the season in a 5-2 win over the Sherwood Metros in the other game of the night. Here’s a recap of the action.

Flames 4, Aces 3

Zac MacKay had a goal and an assist for the Flames while Connor Andrews and Kyler Weeks also scored. Owen Handregan and Daniel Collister each had an assist at the APM Centre in Cornwall.

Will Tuplin and Brayden Arsenault each had a goal and a helper for the Aces while Nick Vandervelden rounded out the scoring. Jacob Hogan, Tristan Cahill and James Doyle each chipped in an assist.

Ryan Clory made 33 saves in regulation and overtime for the win while Colin Gaudette stopped 29 shots in the loss.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period while the Aces took a 2-1 lead to the third. MacKay tied it with 6:17 to go, Vandervelden scored shorthanded with five minutes to play to give the Aces the lead but Andrews tied it 16 seconds later on the power play.

The Flames, which went 1-for-9 on the power play and killed all three of the Aces chances with the man advantage, improved to 6-1-0 while the Aces are 5-1-1

Crunch 5, Metros 2

Tyson Gillis had two goals and an assist to pace the Crunch to victory while Brandon MacLeod Sellar had a goal and an assist.

Remi Arsenault and Giles McInnis also scored in the win at the South Shore Actiplex in Crapaud. Keegan Wagner had two assists while Aaron Feehan and Tanner Gallant each added one.

Michael Jenkins and Ridge Crane replied for the Metros with Sam Valois and Brian Leslie drawing the assists.

Devon Newberry made 42 saves for the victory while Keenan Hayden stopped 42 shots in the loss.

Each team went 1-for-5 on the power play. The Crunch, which held 2-0 and 3-1 period leads, improved to 1-4-0 while the Metros are 2-5.
