CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Maddy Doherty and Cole MacKey are this week’s Holland College Hurricanes athletes of the week.

Doherty, a first-year goaltender with the women’s hockey team, recorded the shutout in a 3-0 win over the Cape Breton Capers Sunday in her regular-season debut.

It’s the second time a ’Canes women’s hockey goaltender recorded a shutout in her debut. Mackenzie Koughan accomplished the feat on Nov. 5, 2016.
Sunday’s victory was the Canes’ first win of the Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association season. Holland College (1-3-0) is chasing the first-place Acadia Axewomen (4-0-0) for the league lead.

Doherty is a sport and leisure management student from Saint John, N.B.

MacKey, a first-year right-side for the men’s volleyball squad, led the ‘Canes to a 3-1 victory over the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association action.

MacKey recorded 14 kills, three aces, four digs and a block as the ’Canes improved to 2-6.

The six-foot MacKey, a Clarenville, N.L., native, is in the sport and leisure management program.
