DesRoches, Giansante play key roles in Red Wings’ win over Vipers

KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — Chandler DesRoches and Stephan Giansante sparked the Western Red Wings to a 2-1 road win over the Kensington Vipers on Friday night.

DesRoches scored with 9:03 remaining in the third period to break a 1-1 tie, and Giansante turned aside 37 of 38 shots he faced at Kensington’s Credit Union Centre.

It was the first of a weekend home-and-home series between the Island Junior Hockey League rivals. The teams were scheduled to meet at the Evangeline Recreation Centre in Abram-Village on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Isaac Knox also scored for the Red Wings, while Ethan Beaulieu, Chandler Wood, Connor Morrissey and Chase Gaudette added assists.

Duncan Picketts, assisted by Tayler Read and Colby MacDonald, replied for the Vipers.

The teams played a scoreless first period and entered the second intermission tied 1-1.

Jonah Arbing also played a strong game in goal for the Vipers, stopping 52 of 54 shots directed his way.
