What you need to know about COVID-19: September 18, 2020
The Charlottetown Bulk Carrier Knights returned to the ice at MacLauchlan Arena on Thursday night.
The New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Under-18 Hockey League team opened a camp that will feature two phases – skills and practices before shifting to a 4-on-4 non-contact tournament next week.
“We have some bantam kids coming out who are still going to be in bantam to see them play at this level and to allow our guys to get out and feel our way through training camp,” said Knights head coach Luke Beck.
“My initial thought when we came up with this was kids were doing a lot of skill stuff and I wanted to try and incorporate a little competition while staying within the guidelines of what we are allowed to do.”
The 40-player camp is sold out, and Beck added the team had to turn players away. Beck went on to say while everyone is anxious to return to normal, it’s important to understand the situation everyone is in because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“We all can get frustrated by what’s going on or what’s not going on, but we need to take a step back and remember there are people whose lives who have been changed so much,” said Beck. “We are fortunate enough to be going back to the rink and will try to use it to the best we are allowed to, have some fun and get back to a little normalcy for the kids.”

The 4-on-4 tournament will feature four teams. Three of the teams are comprised of nine players and one has 10.
“It will be shorter games, faster-paced games, no whistles and a real good workout with some competition and fun to segue into what we are hoping will be an exciting season,” said Beck, who added the Knights are moving along with Hockey P.E.I.’s phases in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. “Once we have been cleared to have a full-on training camp that would include contact and hopefully intra-squad games and exhibition games, we would start our main training camp at that point.”
